Kaimono Privacy Policy

Effective date: September 4, 2026 (revised September 9, 2026: crash reporting added, English version added; September 12, 2026: stopped collecting email addresses and names)

Kaimono ("the app", published in Japan as かいものメモ) respects your privacy. This policy explains what information the app collects and how it is used.

1. The basics

You can use the app without creating an account. Creating lists, managing items, and keeping purchase history all happen entirely on your device.

Information is sent to a server only when you use one of these four features yourself.

FeatureWhat is sent to the server
Sign inOnly an identifier issued by the sign-in service
Save lists to the cloud (while signed in; can be turned off in Settings)The names of all your lists and the items in them
Sharing a listThe name of the shared list and the items in it
Notify near storesThe name, address, and coordinates of the stores you added

As long as you do not sign in, the app sends none of your information anywhere.

2. Information we collect

2-1. Account information

Even if you use the sign-in feature, we do not collect your email address or your name (since 12 September 2026; email addresses collected before that date have been deleted).

All we receive from the sign-in service is an identifier used to recognise your account. The app never receives your password.

Your display name is something you set yourself in the app. It is shown to people you share a list with, so they can see who invited them. Until you set one it shows as "Unnamed user", and you can change it in the app at any time.

2-2. Contents of your lists

List names; item names, brands, sizes, quantities, units, and notes; whether an item has been bought; and when it was bought.

While you are signed in, the contents of your lists are stored on the server under your account, so that the same lists come back when you switch phones or sign in on another device. You can turn this off with "Save lists to the cloud" in Settings. When it is off, lists you have not shared stay on your device.

Only when you share a list can the people you share it with see its contents. While you are signed out, list contents are never sent to the server.

2-3. Store information

The name, address, coordinates (latitude and longitude), and reminder distance of the stores you add.

These are stored on the server only when you turn on "Notify near stores" or share a list.

2-4. Location

Your device's location is used only if you turn on "Notify near stores" (the feature that reminds you what to buy when you come near a store you added).

When you set a store's position on the map, your current location is also used to decide where the map opens. It is not sent to a server in that case either.

2-5. What we do not collect

The app does not collect:

Only when the app crashes or hits an error, a crash report (the error, the device model and OS version, and the app version) is sent to Sentry (see section 4) so the problem can be fixed. It never includes your display name, list contents, or location.

3. How the information is used

The information is used only to:

It is never used for any other purpose without your consent.

4. Sharing with third parties

We never sell your information or provide it to third parties for advertising.

The app relies on the following services to work.

ProviderPurposeInformation sent
Amazon Web Services (AWS)Storing and processing dataThe items in section 2 that are stored on the server
Google LLCSign inAn identifier used to recognise your account (received by the app)
Apple Inc.Sign in (iOS)Same as above
Apple Inc.Maps and address search (iOS)The map area being shown and the address text you search
Google LLCMaps and address search (Android)Same as above
Functional Software, Inc. (Sentry)Crash reporting (United States)The error, device model and OS version, app version

Data on the server is stored in the AWS Tokyo region (ap-northeast-1).

Address search uses the map service built into your device, so the address text you type is sent to the map provider above.

5. Information kept on your device

The app keeps your lists, stores, and purchase history in a database on your device. If you are signed in, an authentication token that keeps you signed in is kept in the device's secure storage (iOS Keychain or Android Keystore).

Uninstalling the app deletes this information from your device.

6. Retention and deletion

7. Children

The app does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

8. Security

9. Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated when laws change or features are added. Significant changes will be announced in the app or in the store listing.

The app currently shows no ads. If ads are introduced in the future, this policy will be updated beforehand to describe what is collected.
